Short overview of new Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM

Canon recently launched the much awaited Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM. It is supposed to be the replacement for the very popular and budget friendly 50mm f/1.8 II lens. The image and specs were first leaked by Digicam-info. The list of specifications is as follows-

  • Lens arrangement 5-group, six (Construction: 6 elements in 5 groups)
  • Optimized coatings to minimize aberrations on contemporary digital cameras
  • Features STM (Stepping motor) to aid with continuous focus while shooting video
  • Full-time manual focus (auto focus over ride)

The dimensions listed are as follows-

  • Length: 39.3mm
  • Weight: 160g (1.55″)
  • 49mm filter thread

Surprisingly it does not appear to have image stabilization. First thing to immediately jump off the page, so to speak is the upgraded build quality. The lens finally features a metal mount. From the slight increase in weight, one can also infer that over all build quality would have also got a bump up.

The lens features an STM (Stepper Motor) that helps in delivering fast, accurate, continuous focusing, especially in video mode while still managing to be silent.

The lens is available for immediate purchase across Canon stores across India and is priced at Rupees 8,995/-
